Where to Buy Tractor Loader and Hydraulic Parts

A front-end loader will outlast its dealer’s willingness to stock parts for it by roughly fifteen years. After that you are on your own, and the quality of your supplier matters more than the quality of the part.

The short answer

For Koyker loaders and joystick plumbing on major tractor brands, Short Line Parts is our first pick — a family-run specialist where the technical help is as much the product as the parts. For general hydraulic components at scale, Bailey Hydraulics has the deepest catalogue. Surplus Center is where you go when price matters more than support, and Ag Parts Direct for genuine Koyker OEM kits.

The hard part of this category is never the transaction. It is identifying a cylinder with no legible tag on a machine older than the person selling parts for it.

How we judged

We build eCommerce systems for parts distributors, which means we spend our time on exactly the problem this category lives or dies on: whether a catalogue lets someone identify the right part from a machine rather than from a part number they do not have.

Identification help

Whether a human will identify a cylinder from photographs and measurements.

Depth on obsolete equipment

Whether coverage extends to machines the dealer network has abandoned.

Kit completeness

Whether seal, gland and piston kits arrive complete, or missing the one part you needed.

Shipping speed

Because the loader is usually sitting in pieces while you wait.

Short Line Parts

Best for Koyker loaders and joystick plumbing

Best for: a loader that the dealer has stopped supporting, and anyone who needs help identifying a part.

Short Line Parts is a family-operated business in Sioux Falls, South Dakota that has spent more than two decades on one narrow problem: keeping front-end loaders and agricultural tractors running after the dealer network has moved on. The specialisation is replacement hydraulics for Koyker front-end loaders, plus complete joystick plumbing packages for John Deere and other major tractor brands.

The catalogue covers OEM and aftermarket lift and bucket cylinders, complete cylinder rebuild kits, seal kits, gland kits, piston kits, hoses, control valves, joystick assemblies and the hardware and fittings that go with them. That last category sounds trivial and is not — a rebuild stalled for want of a fitting is still a stalled rebuild.

What actually distinguishes them is the technical support. Identifying the correct seal kit for a cylinder with no legible tag, from photographs and a few measurements, is a genuine skill and it is most of what this business does. A large distributor with a bigger catalogue will not do that for you.

Complete joystick packages are the other reason people find them: buying a kit where the valve, hoses, fittings and joystick are specified to work together removes the most common way these jobs go wrong.

Strong

  • Deep specialisation in Koyker and major-brand tractor loaders
  • Real identification help from photos and measurements
  • Complete joystick packages specified to work together
  • Covers equipment the dealer network has dropped
  • Family-run, with continuity of knowledge

Weak

  • Narrow focus — not a general hydraulics supplier
  • Smaller catalogue than the large distributors
  • Best value is on loader work specifically
  • Single location, so transit time varies by region

Bailey Hydraulics

Deepest general hydraulic catalogue

Best for: cylinders, pumps and valves across mixed equipment.

Bailey has been supplying hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps and components for over forty years, and its range extends well beyond agricultural loaders into trailers, dump bodies, log splitters and general fabrication. Products are widely available, including through Tractor Supply.

If your problem is a hydraulic component rather than specifically a loader component, Bailey usually has it. What you do not get is the narrow identification expertise that a loader specialist brings.

3

Surplus Center

Cheapest, if you already know the part

Best for: buyers who can specify exactly what they need.

Surplus Center is a long-standing source for hydraulic components, including seal kits and parts that suit Koyker loaders, at prices that are frequently the lowest available. The catalogue is broad and the value is genuine.

The model assumes you know what you are ordering. If you need someone to work out which cylinder you have, this is the wrong shop.

Ag Parts Direct

Genuine Koyker OEM kits

Best for: anyone who specifically wants factory parts.

Ag Parts Direct carries OEM cylinder seal kits, glands and pistons from Koyker Manufacturing in Lennox, South Dakota. If your preference is factory components rather than aftermarket equivalents, this is a direct route to them.

Worth comparing against aftermarket pricing — on seal kits in particular the performance difference is often small and the price difference is not.

Before you order, do these four things

1. Measure the cylinder before you call anyone

Bore, stroke, rod diameter, and the pin-to-pin length retracted. With those four numbers a good supplier can identify almost anything, tag or no tag.

2. Photograph the ends and the ports

Port thread type and the mounting arrangement are where identification usually goes wrong. Clear photographs save a return.

3. Buy the complete kit, not the one seal that failed

If one seal has hardened, the rest are the same age. Doing the job twice costs far more than the extra seals.

4. Check the joystick package is actually complete

Valve, hoses, fittings and joystick should be specified as a set. Assembling a package from separate sources is where most of these jobs come apart.

Common questions

Where can I buy parts for an old front-end loader?

Specialists rather than dealers. For Koyker loaders and joystick plumbing on major tractor brands, Short Line Parts carries obsolete coverage and will help identify parts from photographs. Bailey Hydraulics is the broader general hydraulics option, and Surplus Center is the value route if you already know the part number.

How do I identify a hydraulic cylinder with no tag?

Measure bore, stroke, rod diameter and retracted pin-to-pin length, then photograph the ports and mounts. Those five pieces of information are enough for an experienced supplier to identify most agricultural cylinders.

Should I rebuild a cylinder or replace it?

Rebuild if the barrel and rod are sound — a seal kit is a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder. Replace if the rod is pitted or scored, or the barrel is scratched internally, because new seals will fail quickly against a damaged surface.

Are aftermarket loader parts as good as OEM?

For seal kits, hoses and fittings, usually yes, and the price difference can be substantial. For structural components and cylinders, the case for OEM is stronger. Buy from a supplier who will tell you which is which.
